Ragusa Ibla is a Revelation

November 17, 2021

If you travel to Italy and you’ve never been to Sicily, then you haven’t really been to Italy.

Sicily is not only one of the most beautiful places to visit in Italy, but you can find some of the best food on that beautiful island.

Sicilia was ruled by the Arabs for hundreds of years and you can see that cultural influence in the architecture, art, and even food on the island as well as the Greek and Roman influences. Learn more about the history of Sicily HERE

I spent three of a five-week vacation in Italy in the Sicily region. While I truly enjoyed my experience, I know I have not scratched the surface.

In this blog post, I will summarize my visit to Ragusa Ibla Sicily.  You can learn more about the history of Ragusa Ibla HERE

Ragusa is a city aloft the hills in southeast Sicily.  Ragusa is divided into two towns: Ragusa Ibla (lower old town) and Ragusa Superiore (upper town). You can walk between the two parts of town and observe stunning views of Ragusa Ibla from above.  Ragusa Ibla, where I visited, is the old town of the city. It is home to baroque buildings with incredible views. There are amazing public parks, churches, and fountains.  If you love ancient churches and buildings, you will love Ragusa Ibla.

Let’s talk about what I enjoy most – Eating. Ragusa Does not disappoint. As is the case with Catania, I did not have a single bad meal. I ate with a smile on my face every single time. I also discovered a local red wine that I now LOVE called Parra Parra. I am no wine aficionado but I likey!

THINGS TO EAT

Caponata – a wonderful stew of eggplant, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, etc. It is one of my favorite things to eat and is native to Sicily.  The Caponata in Ragusa was DIVINE.

Scaccia Ragusana – is a type of lasagna bread. Ya’ll.  Y’ALL. This thing Changed. My. Life.  It is a bread layered with sauce, cheese, herbs, eggplant, or potatoes. I am in love with it. I couldn’t eat enough of it. I knew it was going straight to my ass and hips. I did NOT care.

Gelato – Some of the best Gelato I had in Italy were in Sicily. Do not go there without having some Gelato. Hazelnut was my favorite.

If you love Eggplant (I do) you will be in heaven there are so many delightful dishes in Ragusa and across Sicily that feature eggplant. I ate Allllll the Eggplant!

PLACES TO EAT

Camuri

Ristorante II Barocco – Lovely seafood restaurant

Votavota. A Michelin star restaurant in Marina di Ragusa. Good eats and a beautiful restaurant but a little pricey. I tried donkey for the first time there. Didn’t love it but it was interesting.

THINGS TO DO

Stroll around Piazza Duomo, grab a Scaccia Ragusana and a beverage and people watch. I especially loved strolling through the piazza at night. It came alive at night as locals came out for Aperitivo and then dinner.

Duomo di San Giorgia. Gorgeous church in the middle of the square. It is hard to miss.

Cattedrale di San Giovanni Battista. Another beautiful historic church worth seeing.

Giardino Ibleo. Take a stroll through this beautiful public garden and get your pics for the Gram!

Take a day trip to Modica – Lovely baroque churches and buildings

Marina di Ragusa – Take a drive to this adorable beach town about a 20-minute drive from Ragusa Ibla.  Beautiful clear blue water and golden sand. The water is shallow so great for families and children.
