Some of you have read my blog post about my favorite 5 things for safe solo travel HERE and my recent blog post about 7 more things you can do to keep yourself safe during solo travel HERE.
Well, here are 4 more things I think you should add to that list if you are traveling at 40 or older.
Traveling when you’re older isn’t hard but it can be different so here are 3 apps and one item you should never go without if you’re traveling post 40.
First, download the following apps to your phone:
Smart Traveler App
The US State Department Smart Traveler App allows you to get real-time information about health and security issues in every country around the world. You can also register and tell the US embassy where you will be and when so that they can alert you if ish jumps off in a country while you are there. You can find the app HERE.
Sitata App
This app is great for domestic and international travel. You can use it to plan your trip, manage your itinerary and avoid travel disruptions plus connect for help if you need it. You can download them HERE
FirstAid App
This app is from the American Red Cross. It gives you access to real-time information for emergencies, locations to the nearest hospital in the United States (not international), and quizzes to educate you about what to do in certain emergencies. You can download it to your phone HERE
Quick Tip: For any of these make sure you have the VPN on your device OFF so that the locator is pinpointing your location NOT your VPN location 🙂
Then make sure you pack the following item along with everything listed in my post HERE.
- Rapid Covid-19 Antigen Test (proctored version). As of the writing of this post, these are the tests available on the market that allow you take a COVID-19 rapid antigen test in the privacy of your vacation rental or hotel room that will be accepted by major airlines. The key difference with these test is that a portion of it must be observed by a third-party on video.
There are varying prices and requirements for each test so it’s important to visit each website and read the details.
BinaxNOW COVID-19 Antigen Home Test
Ellume COVID-19 Home Test with Azova
Cue COVID-19 Test for Home or OTC Use
Detect Covid-19 Test
I recommend buying a couple of these proctored home tests and taking them along on your trip. That way you can get tested on your own schedule and based on your needs.
I recently used the Qured rapid antigen COVID-19 for travel to Portugal. It was an easy seamless process. I took the test on the morning of a trip that would take place later that evening. I had my results within an hour of submission. The Proctored portion of the test was quick, easy, and thorough. It is important to purchase the test once you book your flight so that it arrives on time. You must also reserve the date for the observation of your test. So this is not something you should do at the last minute.
It doesn’t hurt to also take a couple of the regular at-home Rapid Covid-19 Antigen as well if you just want to know your status as you travel, just understand you can’t use those results to travel. Here is one that I like HERE.
