My 2023 Travel Plans so Far!

December 29, 2022

In this Blog Post I will share my current solo travel plans for 2023, where I am going, and why I picked these destinations and other locations on my secondary list.

So, without further ado, here is a list of where I am going in 2023. These are destinations that are already booked and set so you can keep following me here to learn more about each place, things to do, eat and see.

Where I am going in 2023

Dakar, Senegal

Dakar, Senegal – January 31, 2012: The African Renaissance Monument in the morning. The monument, inaugurated in 2010, consists of a bronze statue located on top on one of the hills outside of Dakar and represents the african family, looking towards the Atlantic Ocean. It’s the tallest statue in Africa.

Nairobi, Kenya

Zebras in Nairobi NP

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Dar es Salaam view of the port from the leaving ferry

Zanzibar, Tanzania

fumba island, zanzibar

Palermo, Mondello and Cefalu, Sicily

Cathedral of Palermo is a prominent landmark in Sicily, Italy

Cairo, Egypt

Giza Pyramids and Sphinx panorama with a camel lying by, Cairo, Egypt.

Accra, Ghana

Accra,Ghana – April 11 2018: Looking through water fountains in Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to the marble Mausoleum and gold statue to the Ghanaian president

And in Mexico where I currently live, I hope  to visit the following places for the first time:

Chiapas

Morelia

Mazunte

Hualtuco

Puerto Escondido

La Paz

Los Cabos

I have been wanting a return visit to the African continent for some time and decided that 2023 will be the year when I return to Mother Africa and see, do and EAT! I have specific plans and excursion plans that I will share when I chronicle each visit individuals. So, stay tuned!

So how did I make these plans? My trips to Senegal, Kenya and Tanzania were booked over a year ago primarily using Scotts Cheap Flights and Booking.com. I am  doing organized group trips to Egypt and Ghana.  I do not usually do organized group travel but I am trying it next year and will compare that experience with my solo travel experiences.

My solo trip to Sicily for a milestone birthday was kind of impromptu decision.  I found a decent air fare to Sicily in peak summer season and I will spend time in Palermo and visit the beach towns of Mondello and Cefalu.

For my many excursions I relied on Viator and GetYourGuide to find great deals on Safaris, walking tours, and airport transfers.  As a woman traveling alone, I make a special point to ensure that I have all my ducks in a row before I get on my departure flights as I don’t like surprises though they still happen from time to time.

I cannot wait to return to the African continent to see and do things I have had on my bucket list like:

  • The African Renaissance Monument, Dakar Senegal
  • Shopping the Masai Market in Nairobi Kenya
  • Strolling with lions in Dakar Senegal
  • Visiting the Pink Lake in Dakar Senegal
  • An overnight safari in Tanzania
  • Feeding and swimming with turtles in Zanzibar, Tanzania
  • The Pyramid of Giza in Egypt
  • Cruising on the Nile in Egypt
  • Sunning myself on the beaches of Mondello and Cefalu in Sicily
  • Eating ALLLL the food in every destination I hit!

And so much more! And I will take you along every step of the way!

If you are planning to solo travel in 2023, I would encourage you to start your planning now!

Tips for starting your Solo Travel Planning

  1. Monitor travel apps and websites for the best deal.  Download and follow websites for travel rate aggregators like Scott Cheap Flights, Skyscanner, Kayak and Google Flights to identify deals
  2. Let the deal guide your destination. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go to the places you have dreamed of but be prepared to go whenever a great deal shows up.
  3. Book the bulk of your travel in Winter/Spring and Fall shoulder season. The best deals are after New Year’s and before Spring break (early March).  The second best are after Labor day and before Thanksgiving. Especially avoid Europe in the summer month and instead do the Caribbean which will cost less in the summer.
  4. Book early. While there are often last-minute deals, especially if you don’t have set travel destination targets, if you are looking to travel to specific places, the earlier you book the better.
  5. Use credit card point programs to lower your travel cost. If you already use credit cards, err on the side of only using cards that pay you back in some way, either cash back or points.  I like the Chase Sapphire and the American Express Hilton Aspire.
  6. Research appropriate dress for you destination. Especially if traveling to Muslim countries, do your homework about what is or is not acceptable attire so that you blend in instead of standing out. You can create a Team Carry-on Clothing Capsule that is country appropriate if you research and plan early.

My Top 2023 Solo Travel Destinations for First Time Solo Travel

If you are planning a solo trip and need some destination ideas you may consider in addition to my 2023 picks, here are my top 5 place to consider for 2023 solo travel if you are Black Woman over 50 traveling solo for the first time.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico is an amazing destination for solo travel for Black Women over 40. Recently voted the friendliest city in the World, San Miguel de Allende boasts mild climates all year round, natural hot springs, wineries. Safe and affordable with endless things to do, see and eat.

Oaxaca City, Mexico

Oaxaca City, Mexico is The New Orleans of Mexico is a safe wonderful destination. If you love great food as I do and a deep cultural history visit Oaxaca.

Florence, Italy

I could wax poetic all day long about the wonder that is the city of Florence in the Tuscany region of Italy.  Florence is the complete package. Food, Culture, Art, Music everything. It is home to some of the most timeless pieces of art. It is safe and friendly and an ideal place for a first-time solo traveler.

Tbilisi, Georgia

Georgia (the country not the state) is a hidden gem in Eastern Europe. Tbilisi, its capital is affordable, beautiful, safe with great food and wine.

Tobago, West Indies

Tobago, the sister island of Trinidad and part of the republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is true hidden gem in the Caribbean. Home to waterfalls, rain forest, rare birds hidden coves and gorgeous beaches, it is an island you may have never heard of but should definitely get to know. It is also a foodie paradise where you can eat some of the most delicious food you will ever sample in your life. It is believed that the island in the novel Robin Crusoe is based on the island.

While it is not the most inexpensive place to vaca While it is not the most inexpensive place to vacation, California is my favorite place to vacation in the United States of America.

A personal favorite of mine is San Francisco, but I also enjoy Los Angeles. California also has beautiful places like Catalina Island, Malibu, Monterey, San Diego. I love vacationing in Southern California. There’s lots of fun things to do and great places to eat.

I really enjoyed the Griffin Observatory, the Getty Museum, and of course the Hollywood sign. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, Visiting the Hollywood walk of fame, and Madame Tussauds wax museum. Of course the dining options are endless.

And the sunsets in Southern California are some of the most stunning sunsets you’ll see anywhere.

One of the things I still want to do is to fly into San Francisco rent a car, and then drive all the way to San Diego. I was planning to do it for my birthday in 2020 but you know how that turned out!

This is not an endorsement of California as a great place to live, nor am I saying it is the safest place to solo travel.

IMHO no where in the USA is very safe for any type of travel because of the constant random gun violence and mass shootings.

But, California doesn’t have a government and governor promoting anti-black and homophobic laws every other day.

There are a couple other places that I really like for solo travel. And I will share my other two favorites, and I have a feeling they may surprise some of you. 👀👀

Have you solo traveled to California? Did you enjoy it?

Again, you do not have to agree with me. Please feel free to share any strong feelings of disagreemen on your own platform!

One of the things I aim to do in 2023 is be very h One of the things I aim to do in 2023 is be very honest and candid about not just the wonderful things that happen when I travel but some of the not so wonderful things.

In my current BaldGirlWillTravel blog post I share my recent experience confronting white privilege in Dakar Senegal.

While others probably have had similar experiences but choose not to talk about them, I am going to talk about mine because travel is not just pretty pictures and fun adventures.

When you are Black and traveling and moving in the world you always have to deal with the impact of white supremacy slavery colonialism and anti-black racism. The impact of these things are reflected, not just in the United States of America but everywhere.

Overall I had a wonderful time in Dakar. The people are amazing. The food is outstanding, and I will share a blog specifically dedicated to that subject separately. But in this blog post I share the encounter, how I dealt with it, and my overall thoughts on the expectation many have that WE have to be “nice” no matter how they behave and what they do. And my response to that is “nice for what?”

SAVE AND SHARE When I lived in the United States, SAVE AND SHARE

When I lived in the United States, I spent a significant amount of time in the state of Florida because I have family and friends there.

I also lived in the state of Florida, South Florida, to be exact from the age of 14 to 21. So I’m not speaking of this anecdotally or based on what I read in the news. I actually lived in the state and experienced the depth of the racism there personally. I also took my child to Disney World several times, and even thought about visiting Destin for vacation at one point because I hear it has some of the prettiest beaches in the USA

I left the United States of America for a reason, but there are places that I would still consider for vacation.

But in this post, I share the number one place that I will NOT consider for vacation in 2023

Where is it?

Florida

unfortunately, two people I love reside in the state so I can’t completely avoid visiting but when I do visit again, I intend to spend as little as possible, do no shopping and only stay as long as I absolutely have to

The policies and politics of that state are anti-black and frankly downright racist in my opinion and I think it’s time for Black people to take what is happening there seriously because it could be the rest of the USA very soon if you’re not careful.

I’m not gonna give my money to a state that has very open and clear anti-black policies, and encourages antiblack racism.

so for me, it’s a big fat HELL NAW on Florida

OH btw my block and delete button is working really well today

you don’t have to agree with me.

Feel free to disagree on your own platform. #hellno #hellnaw #florida #solotravel #travel #blackandabroad #melanin #travelwhileblack #blacktravel

Solo Travel Safety Tip Hotel edition
Limit access to your hotel room by keeping the “do not disturb“ tag on your door at all times. Only take it off when YOU want the room cleaned or do what I do and just stop the maid in the hallway give her the dirty towels and get clean ones. I really don’t like people in and out of my hotel room so this is what I do to limit access.

you are not not safer in a hotel then you are in a short term rental like Airbnb or VRBO

your risk are just different.

I spent 15+ years overseeing global security in the international development sector.

The most important thing to remember when traveling alone, especially as a woman, is to practice situational awareness and common sense. If it feels wrong even for a minute don’t do it.

I share solo travel safety and security advice based on my 15+ years of experience in the downloadable
