In this blog post I will share places in Italy that are popular but I did not love .

Everybody loves Italy especially me but there are places in Italy that are very popular that I really wanted to love but didn’t.

They are:

Venice, Italy

Venice is pretty there’s no question of that. But it’s also overcrowded. It can smell especially in the summer months when it’s hot because  the canal water is dirty. It is over priced, probably one of the most expensive places to visit in Italy. The food is good but not great. Oh and it’s sinking.  I encountered obvious antiblack racism during my recent visit. I have visited Venice twice I don’t have plans to visit again anytime soon. IMHO it’s highly overrated

Rome, Italy

I would say the same about Rome as I would about Venice but it’s not sinking.  Rome is worth a single visit if you’ve never been. It’s packed with history and culture and the Sistine chapel is a joy to be hold. But it’s also dirty and filled with graffiti. The food is good but the people are not very friendly and I also encountered antiblack racism there. Rome to me now is just a transit point to other parts of Italy but it is not a destination.

Milan, Italy

I will be honest and say I only spent a day in Milan but I was not impressed by it at all. The area around the Duomo is interesting and the Duomo itself is beautiful but I found the city to be dirty and just not particularly interesting. 

Positano and Capri

Both Positano and Capri were beautiful but very very expensive.  Positano is very sloppy and hilly and not fun to walk.  I recommend staying in Sorrento and just doing day trips to both. I would also recommend visiting in off-season not in the summer. 

Cinque Terre, Italy

I will say that the five towns or Cinque Terre, are beautiful. But the hills and the slopes almost broke my knees😳. It is just a lot to deal with if you are not into hiking up and down steep streets. The villages are charming but the walking up and down the hills was too much for me. So if you visit bring very comfortable shoes and you better have good knees! Places in Italy that I absolutely love?

Sicily

Yes technically Sicily is not mainland Italy but it is part of the nation and it is amazing. 

Taormina is just as beautiful as Positano and Capri more affordable and walkable. Also visit Catania, Ragusa and Palermo.

Tuscany, special mention Vicopisano

Tuscany as a region is definitely worth exploring but special mention goes to Vicopisano. I completely fell in love with the small town about 2 hours  from Florence.  I stayed at a lovely bed-and-breakfast run by Marie of Authentic Tuscany (follow her in Instagram). I highly recommend it.

Florence, Italy

And of course in my opinion if you visit Italy and you don’t visit Florence you haven’t really visited Italy.

IMHO Florence is the most beautiful city in the world.  I could go over and over and over again and always find something new to love. Great views great food great people great art great culture great everything.  So if you wanna know where I think you should go in Italy now you have my list.
